Starling is told by Desmond Tiny that she has been made to love and be with Larten Crepsley, as a result of this she is spurred on to continue her painful treatments at the hands of Mr. Tiny in order to fufill her destiny and be with the man of her dreams.
When she arrives at Vampire Mountain she meets the charming Larten Crepsley and also the similarily handsome Prince Mika Ver Leth, sparks begin to fly between her and Larten and they, inevitably with a lot of persuasive techniques from Starling to hurry up his romance with her, end up in a sort of relationship together like she wanted.
However there are some events which shake her love for Larten:
1. When he leaves before she wakes up after they first make love together, and is seen with Arra Sails when she comes to find him - a vampire he has been partners with before. Starling becomes pregnant with Larten's baby.
2. Larten and Arra are over heard by Starling talking about their first kiss, she believes that they reinact it when in actual fact they merely just make kissing noises to tease each other.
3. A few weeks later, when after a fight between her and Arra over their feelings for Larten, he goes to attend to her wounds instead of looking to Starling and seeing if she is alright instead. This upsets her even more and she goes back to her bedroom, she finds after a blow delivered by Arra she has miscarried her baby.
Starling then recieves a vist from Mika, tells him all about her feelings, what happened and how she is confused, if Larten was meant to love her like Tiny said, why is he acting in this way? Eventually it unfolds that most of Tiny's words to her have been a lie, and Starling doesnt know what to believe.
Mika confronts Larten and tells the vampires that him and Arra are responsible for the death of a vampire child, they call for Arra's execution and Lartens also. After this Larten finds Starling and attempts to talk through with her what happened, and apologise for his actions against her.
A trial is held before Arra is executed, Starling refuses to drop the charges. Arra is killed.
Mr. Tall, Desmond and Evanna visit the mountain shortly after hearing about what happened, Desmond and Mr. Tall make a deal with the vampires, that, Starling must have a child by Larten Crepsley or they will take back the Blood Stone, and they might let it fall into the hands of the vampaneze by accident.
Inevitably she is reluctant to display her feelings for Larten again, and instead busies herself with preparing for the Vampire Trials, at the same time as Darren Shan.
